What flatware “grade” of stainless steel is best for me?
In order to qualify as “stainless steel,” there must be at least 11.5% chromium contained in a steel alloy. All CAMBRIDGE products use a minimum of 18% chromium. We offer three grades of stainless steel which are represented by the percentage of chrome (and, in two grades, nickel) used in the steel composition of our products. Chrome helps to make the steel more resistant to corrosion and nickel helps to provide a softer, silvery tone. The first level is “18/10 stainless” which means that at that grade there will be a mix of 18% chrome and 10% nickel. Next is “18/8 stainless” which includes a combination of 18% chrome and 8% nickel. The last grade is “18/0” which has 18% chrome and no nickel. All these grades meet the highest quality standards when it comes to fighting corrosion and can be used on a regular basis.

What does the term “gauge” mean for flatware?
Gauge refers to how thick a given utensil is. As a result, a dinner fork will have a higher gauge than a salad fork because it is thicker. As one would expect, the higher the gauge, the more expensive a particular design or pattern will be. It is important, however, not to base your purchase decision solely on gauge since being thicker does not always mean it is better. It really is a matter of how the selected utensil feels in your hand, your sense of style and choice of pattern.

What are the different types of flatware finishes?
What type of finish you choose can often be a reflection of your lifestyle or the intended use of the flatware you buy. Flatware with a Mirror finish is shiny, polished, and classic. Satin finishes have a brushed, matte effect that disguises fingerprints and scratches. Sand finishes have a shimmery, frosted appearance and are often used together with Mirror accents to highlight a design or pattern on the handle. Rumbled finishes have a unique distressed look perfect for complementing vintage or industrial aesthetics. Many of our flatware patterns are also available in a variety of durable colors, combined with one or more of the previously mentioned finishes.
